World Sight Day

Let's open our eyes

We live in a beautiful world, but not everyone can see it. 253 million people suffer from vision impairment and 36 million are blind or going blind. Yet, 80% of all vision impairment can now be prevented, treated or cured.

Created in 2012, the Fondation Théa aims to promote or assist, in France and abroad, humanitarian or general interest initiatives to aid the fight against blindness and improve eye health.

Back in the 19th century, Dr. Paul Chibret, a trachoma specialist and founder of the French Society of Ophthalmology (S.F.O.), was a precursor in the humanitarian field on the African continent. Today, his descendants, Henri and Jean-Frédéric Chibret, have perpetuated and strengthened his action in the French- and Portuguese-speaking countries, less assisted than their English-speaking neighbors.

Because trachoma continues to be the most prevalent infectious cause of blindness, it has become the Fondation Théa’s top priority. Because access to medical healthcare remains a major challenge on the African continent, education is also a key focus of the Fondation Théa which massively supports the training of ophthalmologists and all healthcare professionals involved in eye health.
